It works on skin in following way:

  1. Salicylic acid gets into the oil glands and reduces oil production. Thus helps clear off acne.
  2. It kills the bacteria causing acne.
  3. It exfoliates the superficial dead layer of skin. Thus, opens the clogged pores. This helps in treating comedones and acne. Also helps in treating pigmentation. That’s because the increased pigment in superficial dead layer is also removed.
  4. By exfoliating the superficial dead layer it brings a natural clarity and glow to skin.

Salicylic acid is prescribed for: melasma, general skin glow, acne , acne marks .

WHAT CAN BE THE SIDE EFFECTS?

If higher concentration is applied, it may burn the skin. Even when right concentration is applied the wrong way, skin burns might happen. This emphasizes the importance of getting peels done from a dermatologist. And not at saloon and spa.

WHAT ARE THE PRECAUTIONS?

Avoid bleach 5 days post salicylic acid peel application.  After that one can go ahead with peel.

Avoid saloon facials for 5 days post salicylic acid peel.

Pregnant ladies should not use skin care products using salicylic acid .

CAN ONE NOT GO OUT IN SUN AFTER SALICYLIC ACID PEELS?

It’s not that one cannot go out in sun. But avoid direct sun bathing for 5 days post salicylic acid peel like on beach holiday or sun bathing in winters. One can go out in sun to do routine work.

WHAT ARE SKIN CARE PRODUCTS IN WHICH SKIN CAN GET BENEFIT OF SALICYLIC ACID?

Facewashes : Face wash containing 1 to 2 percent salicylic acid are easily available as OTC.

Creams and gel: Creams and gels containing 1 to 2 percent salicylic acid are available on dermatologist’s prescription for home care use.

Chemical peel:  Salicylic acid in 20 to 30 percent are done at dermatologist clinic at 10 days interval.

WHAT ARE THE BEST SALICYLIC ACID PEELS?

Various Salicylic acid peels are available by different brands. But the best are the ones which are freshly prepared. At our clinic every time a fresh salicylic acid peel is made for every patient.  Salicylic acid peels absorbs  moisture from air and gets diluted. Thus it’s efficacy decrease every time the bottle is opened. This explains why a freshly prepared peel is the best.

Absolutely not . Peels removes superficial dead layers of skin. which are eventually replaced by a new layer formed underneath.

WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL?

Chemical peel is a liquid applied to skin for it’s rejuvenation. Word chemical peel is a misnomer. It’s concentrated fruit acid extracts derived from fruits. Glycolic acid is made from sugarcane, lactic acid peel from milk, so on and so forth.

WHAT ARE THE USES OF PEELS?

When applied to skin it:

  1. Removes the superficial dead layer. Topmost dead layer should be removed at frequent intervals to allow better penetration of skin care products. Also, to give instant skin clarity.
  2. Hydrates the skin.
  3. By removing dead skin and hydrating it, its leaves the skin clear and rejuvenated.
  4. In case of oily skin, reduces oil production.
  5. Kill pimple causing bacteria. Thus helps cure acne.
  6. They remove skin pigmentation. When superficial dead skin is removed, pigment deposited is removed along the way.
  7. Long run, if one is regular with peels, it delays ageing by boosting collagen production in skin.

HOW ARE PEELS DONE?

A liquid is applied to skin with a brush. It’s left for few minutes.  Slight burning sensation is felt.  Then it’s neutralized and removed with a neutralizer.

If done by a doctor using high end products, following all necessary instructions, chances of side-effects are nil.

DOES PEEL HURT?

No, slight burning sensation is felt when peel is applied which goes off when peel is removed.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF PEELS?

Peels are of two types:

Superficial peels:  Peels off the superficial layers, and peeling at microscopic level so not visible to naked eyes.

Deep peels: Peels penetrate deeper into skin, and leads to visible peeling.

ARE THERE ANY POST PROCEDURE PRECAUTIONS?

Person can resume normal life immediately post procedure. Regular use of moisturizer and sunscreen is advised for a week. Also avoid any other chemical treatment on face like bleach, facial etc. for a week post procedure.

ONCE I STOP TAKING PEELS, WOULD MY SKIN BECOME WORSE?

Not at all. Once the effect wanes off after 12 to 18 months, one is back to where one started from, never at -1. So getting repeated sessions is purely out of choice and never out of dependency on the procedure.

HOW ARE THE PEELS SESSIONS SCHEDULED?

Depending upon the indication and type of peel used, 3 to 5 sessions are suggested. They are scheduled every ten to fifteen days.
