BLACK SPOT (FRECKLES)
WHAT ARE FRECKLES AND HOW ARE THEY FORMED?
Freckles are tiny black spots seen generally on face. However they can be seen on chest and other sun exposed regions of body too. They are primarily formed in fair skin people post excessive sun exposure. Some people have genetic predisposition to get them i.e. even with dark complexion they may get after minimum sun exposure.
HOW CAN THEIR FORMATION BE PREVENTED?
Their prevention can be achieved with proper sun protective measures.
HOW CAN THEY BE TREATED?
Nd: Yag Q switched laser (532nm) or radiofrequency which would ablate the superficial layer of skin would help. Since freckles are formed due to pigmentation deposited in very superficial layers of skin, when superficial skin layer is ablated, superficial dead skin peels off and it takes off the pigment along with it leaving a clearer freckle free skin.
WILL CREAMS AND PILLS WORK?
No pill would work. Dipigmentory creams would bring about 10 to 20 % lightening of freckles but never complete clearance. So lasers are a much better alternative.
IS THE TREATMENT PAINFUL?
Since done after application of numbing cream, procedure is rendered comfortable.
ARE THEIR ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Procedure is safe provided done by a dermatologist using good quality equipment.
IS THEIR ANY DOWNTIME/ POST TREATMENT HEALING TIME?
Yes, immediately post treatment there would be redness and swelling around each freckle where laser shot as been given. It would be totally gone by next day morning. Tiny black crust would appear at each spot, which would fall own it’s own in 5 to 7 days time leaving clear skin behind.
WILL THEY RECUR?
Of course they can recur, if the causative factor i.e. sun exposure is continued. So if one can’t stop sun exposure, once a year removal is recommended.
SUMMARY: Freckles are black spots, which appear due to excessive sun exposure on sun exposed parts.single session of laser would cure it. To prevent recurrence take sun protective measures.
