DIY : MAKE NATURAL CREAM AT HOME

Natural ingredients are always welcome. Skin would love to be pampered with natural stuff.  Making a batch of cosmetic at home can be super fun. Ingredients are under your control. Customization can happen according to one’s need.

So, let’s get started.

MAIN TWO INGREDIENTS:

All you need is Aloe Vera gel and oils. Blend them well. Your cream is ready. Yes it’s that’s easy.

Oils and Alovera

In case of dry skin one can go for concoction of oils like; almond oil, vitamin E oil, coconut oil, castor oil, mustard oil, flaxseed oil. Amount of each oil can vary. One can choose according to one’s need.

Normal or oily skin people can choose the lighter oil. Avoid heavy oils like castor oil.

There is no fixed quantity. One can adjust and play around with that. People with oily skin can have more of aloevera and less of oils. On the other hand, people with dry skin can have the other way round.

Blend Oils and Alovera gel well to form a cream

PRESERVATIVE :

Since our preparation has a water base: aloe vera, adding a preservative is must. Few drops of liquid 0.5% Germall plus would be enough. It’s a broad spectrum preservative. Rough guide would be: add 1gm Germall plus to 100 gm of product.

FRAGRANCE:

Adding few drops of essential oils add a nice aroma to your preparation. People with extremely sensitive skin are better off without essential oils. For essential oils are known to cause allergy in some. In caseyou are not allergic, go ahead and add some.

Emulsifiers are not needed. Just blend aloe vera and oils well. Blending them well is a must.

People suffering from eczema, allergic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis must apply these hydrating creams at least twice a day.

Flax seed oil contains omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. Excellent for repairing damaged skin.

Vitamin E is an excellent antioxidant.

Coconut oil is great hydrating agent.

In case rancid aroma starts coming, that means oils have oxidized. Better to discard and make a new batch.

One can put them into different jars or case. Gift them toyour loved ones. And enjoy using them for yourself.

GUIDLINES FOR CHOOSING A SUNSCREEN:

A good sunscreen should have the following features:

1. BROAD SPECTRUM SUNSCREEN

a) Presence of ingredients giving protection against UVA rays ( oxybenzone , avobenzone)

b) Presence of ingredients giving protection against UVB rays (octinoxate , salicylates)

Sunrays contain UVA and UVB. A good sunscreen should contain ingredients giving protection to both. If it has both the ingredients, broad spectrum sunscreen would be printed on it.

2. Presence of both organic and inorganic components

Organic: work by absorbing UV rays (UVA and UVB filters mentioned above)

Inorganic: work by reflecting UV rays (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide)

3.  SPF (Sunburn protection factor)

SPF is Measure of protection against UVB rays

SPF                                         % of protection provided

15                                           93

30                                           97

50                                            99

Minimum SPF should be 15 and maximum 50. SPF beyond this is just a marketing gimmick.

4. PA

PA Measure of protection against UVA rays. Given as PA +, PA ++, PA+++. More the stars,  more the protection.

5. Substantivety is Sweat or Water Resistant

Sunscreen is labeled as: water resistance if it maintains SPF after 40 minutes of water immersion.

Sunscreen is labeled as: very water resistance if can persist after 80 minutes of water immersion.

If you indulge in water sports or activities which entails lots of sweating better chose the ones with water resistant labeled on them.

6. Non Comedogenic or Non Oily

People with oily skin should choose one with non comedogenic labeled on it. It means it has lesser chances of leading to pimple formation.

People with dry or normal skin can chose one meant for their skin type. Skin type would be mentioned on sunscreen.

7. Non allergic:  means it has lesser tendency to cause allergic reaction. People with sensitive skin should buy one with no fragrance.

8. Presence of micronized technology leading to better cosmetic appeal:

Certain ingredients like titanium dioxide are responsible for whitening effect seen after sunscreen application. If present in micro sized particles then whitening effect mitigates. Thus, sunscreen has a  better cosmetic appeal.

GUIDLINES FOR USING A SUNSCREEN

WHAT IS THE RIGHT QUANTITY OF APPLICATION?

Tablespoon method has to be followed:

Little more than half table spoon for: face, neck, each arm respectively.

Little more than one tablespoon for:  each leg, back, chest

Total of 35 ml or 6 tablespoons for entire body.  It amounts to application of 2mg/cm 2.

2. Timings of application:

Sunscreen has to be applied at least 20 minutes before going out in sun for it takes that much time for a sunscreen to get start working. Once applied, it works only for 2 to3 hours, so one has to re apply it after every 3 hours. No need to wash face every time before reapplication.

3. Sunscreen use in children: Not recommended for infants younger than 6 months. Sunscreen application is considered safe after six months of age.

4. To enhance the cosmetic appeal: In case one feels oily even after applying  a non oily sunscreen , dab compact powder over face to absorb excess oiliness and get that matt finish. Choose micronized labeled sunscreen to avoid whitish tinge left after application of sunscreen.

5 TYPES OF BLACK SPOTS ON FACE

WHAT ARE VARIOUS TYPES OF BLACK SPOTS ON FACE?

Black spots on face can be either types:

1.Freckles: Scattered multiple tiny brown to dark brown flat spots. They occur mainly due to sun exposure in fair individuals. Genetic predisposition also play a very important role in there occurrence. They mainly occur in fair individuals.

Freckles

2. DPN: Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra : Scattered multiple tiny, slightly raised above skin surface. They mainly occur in darker races.

DPN: Before After

3. Moles: Can vary in size from 0.5 mm to 5 mm. Occurrence is usually without any cause. They is no reason behind their occurrence.

Moles : Before After

4. Sebborhoeic Keratosis: Black spot raised above skin surface, rough and irregular to touch. Sun exposure and ageing the main causative factors. Thus, seen in older age groups.

5. Lentigens: Jet black, well defined flat black spots.

All are harmless skin conditions. People seek removal only for cosmetic concerns.

WHY ARE BLACK SPOTS FORMED FORMED?

Black spots are formed because of either of the following reasons:

  1. Sun exposure
  2. Ageing and Passing years
  3. Genetic tendency to get them
  4. They may occur without any cause in many

HOW CAN THEY BE TREATED?

Single session of laser can cure them. Either Co2 ablative laser or radiofrequency would do. Both ablate the spots with precise heat. Very large moles may require surgical excision.

Swelling and redness seen immediately after black spot ablation with laser.

CAN’T CREAMS AND PILLS REMOVE BLACK SPOTS?

No, because creams don’t penetrate deep enough into skin to remove them. Neither are they that strong to ablate a black lesion. Also when creams and lotion are used to burn something on skin, we cannot control their penetration into skin. Lasers are controlled, thus a better option.

IS IT SAFE TO REMOVE BLACK SPOTS WITH LASER?

Yes, absolutely provided done by a dermatologist using high quality laser.

IS IT PAINFUL?

No, since done after application of numbing creams.

WILL BLACK SPOTS ONCE REMOVED RECUR?

The ones removed won’t recur but the new ones can come, since causative factor can’t be removed. But the new ones come at very slowspeed. It’s not that one got black spots removed and within a month new onescame. New ones takes 1 to 3 years to come.

IS THERE ANY POST TREATMENT HEALING TIME?

Yes, immediately after the treatment there is redness and swelling, which goes off in one to two hours. Black crusts are formed at the points where laser is given next morning. They fall off own it’s own in 4 to 5 day’s time. Leaving behind clear skin.

CAN ONE DO ANYTHING TO PREVENT RECURRENCE ?

Nobody can stop ageing. Sun protection can help up to a certain extent to prevent new ones from coming.

CONCLUSION: Black spots on face can be of various types. Single session laser would help you get rid of them. Creams and pills don’t cure them.

HAIR FALL : CAUSES AND TREATMENT

Scalp has approximately 100,000 hair. Fall of upto 50 to 70hair per day is normal. Old hair keeps falling only to be replaced by new hair.Hair fall beyond 100 strands per day should propel one to seek medicalattention.

There could be various causes for hair fall. Finding thecause is the first step towards treatment.

  1. Nutritional deficiency: Lack of essential nutrients like iron, biotin, protein, vitamin D3 etc. in diet. People often claim to be very cautious and putting in every effort to eat healthy, but till the time one has these things in one’s kitchen – cooker, fridge and oven, one claim to be having nutritious diet falls flat since 87% of the nutrition is killed in food cooked in cooker. Similarly microwaves are strong enough to kill the nutrition in diet. Now did you realize why, almost everybody is having hair fall, dark circles, early whitening of hair, fatigue etc.

Chloroflorocarbons are supposed to be very dangerous for one’s health. These harmful gases are continuously emitted in the fridge. We keep food under these harmful gases and then consume them. Worst, after doing this day in and out we claim to be eating healthy.

SOLUTION: Add raw uncooked food to diet-sprouts, amla (Indian Gooseberry), almonds, dates, milk, soya, curd, lassi, gud(darker the gud better it is, whiter the gud bad it is) etc.

Take biotin supplements for three months after dermatologist prescription.

Get serum ferritin levels checked. In casethey turn out to be less than 40ng/dl, one is deficient in iron. Rememberdespite hemoglobin levels being normal one can have hair fall secondary to irondeficiency. Hemoglobin is the measure of iron in blood circulation, ferritin isthe amount of iron stores in body. If they are less, iron deficiency inducedhair fall would occur.

HAVE seeds, amla, dates, almonds etc every day .
  • Hormonal imbalance: Various hormonal imbalances can lead to hair fall.

Both, excess or less thyroid levels leads to hair fall. Get TSH, T3 AND T4 levels checked.

Polycystic ovarian disease: Excess of various hormones – Prolactin, FH, LSH, free testosterone, Insulin etc. leads to conglomeration of hair fall, obesity, acne, and irregular periods.

SOLUTION: A thorough checkup of all hormones and hormonal treatment balances the situation.

  • Androgenic Alopecia:It occurs due to hormone named testosterone. Here the amount of hormone is normal but the hair strands are sensitized to the hormone.Sensitized hair first gets thinned out and finally dies permanently. However it follows different pattern in male and females.

Male: Males start losing hair at the boththe frontal corners. Slowly the hair line recedes backwards.

Male : androgenic alopecia

Female: there is overall thinning of hairand widening of central partition. However there is no balding in women ever.Cheer up ladies!

Female pattern hair loss

SOLUTION:  Minoxidil 5% solution applied over scalp every night on dermatologist prescription would help further regression of hair.

  •  Chemical and heat damage: Advent of new era of hair treatments like rebonding, colouring, straightening comes with sure shot way to damaged hair.

SOLUTION: If you are fond of these treatments, get them only at the lower part of hair and never ever at the hair roots near scalp. Thus, one can prevent damage up to a great extent.

  • Stress: Stress releases various bunch of hormones which are bad for hair and skin.

SOLUTION: Resolve to take ten minutes off for pranayama (deep breathing exercises and meditation, travel to offbeat destinations, make time for your hobbies, write down your worries : it’s a great way to let all the bad emotions out which may be stifling inside making you uneasy.)

  • Recent illness: Any serious episode of illness, typhoid, malaria, surgery, hepatitis etc. will lead to severe hair fall three months after the illness. And not during or immediately after the illness.
  • Post pregnancy:A women gets amazing hair throughout pregnancy because of surge in estrogen hormone. Immediately post-delivery, she suffers from severe hair fall that’s because of sudden withdrawal of hormones. This hairfall lasts for 6 to 18 months. Nothing to panic, it all get normal in due course of time.
  • Crash dieting: Fad for size zero compels many to opt for crash dieting .It severely affects  there nutritional supply leading to hair fall.

SOLUTION: Popping up multivitamin pills to make up for the loss and gorging on healthy diet is the way out.

Hope this helped you figure out your causefor hair fall.

WHITE HAIR : CAUSES AND TREATMENT

Hair turning white before forties is a growing concern amongst youth. Continuous formation of oxygen free radicals in body due to stress, nutritional deficiency, heat and chemical exposure etc. is the prime reason. Oxygen free radicals exhaust the black color producing cells in hair giving rise to white hair. Thus, treatment should aim at reducing free radical formation and their continual flushing out from body.

WHITE HAIR

Resorting to various detoxification remedies on regular basis would help flushing them out. Details of various detoxification methods to be done at home are mentioned in our detoxification blog. To reduce their formation following things need to be followed:

1. Stress: Excess work and less energy to accomplish the same give rise to stress. A great deal of energy is lost by over thinking mind. Meditation is the best way to give some rest to mind and restore the lost energy. Pranayam like anulomvilom and kapaalbhati are other deep breathing exercises done regularly help control anxiety a long way.

2. Nutritional deficiency: Especially because of eating too much junk, packed food, bassi/stale food and consuming food kept in fridge or cooked in microwave and cooker.

Try to eat fresh and not bassi food cooked over three hours. Check our food blogs on our website for amazing ways to transform your food habits the healthy way without compromising on taste.

Try to add as much raw food as possible to your diet, vegetable soups, fruit, fruit juices, sprouts etc.

3. Chemical damage by shampoos and saloon treatments like hair colour, rebonding, straightening etc.

Switch to chemical free indigo leaves based hair dyes. Use SLS free shampoos.

4. Heat damage: Use of blow dryer and sun exposure, exposes hair to excessive heat.

To cut down the heat exposure by a blow dryer use the one with attached comb and restrict its use to 15 seconds every day. Using the one with attached comb gives you the advantage of blow drying the entire mane in 15 seconds thus reducing the heat exposure greatly. Cover hair with scarf when out in sun.

5. Another common observation is, people with sinusitis having white hair with greater frequency.

Do pranayam (deep breathing excercises ) regularly to cure sinusitis. Once it’s cured the occurrence of white hair would be halted.

TREATMENT

Allopathy doesn’t have an effective cure.

Ayurvedic remedy
1. Take 50 gms of coconut oil, take 5 pieces of amla and heat the oil till amla turns black. Cool oil and store it in a bottle. Apply three times a week overnight before washing it next day.

2. Take 4 table spoon of Amla powder. Add water and lemon juice. Mix till a paste like consistency is formed. Apply for 20 minutes on hair and scalp before head wash. Wash it with plain water avoiding shampoo. Do it twice a week.

3. Eat lots of amla or amla juice every day.

  1. Salicylic acid gets into the oil glands and reduces oil production. Thus helps clear off acne.
  2. It kills the bacteria causing acne.
  3. It exfoliates the superficial dead layer of skin. Thus, opens the clogged pores. This helps in treating comedones and acne. Also helps in treating pigmentation. That’s because the increased pigment in superficial dead layer is also removed.
  4. By exfoliating the superficial dead layer it brings a natural clarity and glow to skin.

FOR WHAT SKIN PROBLEMS IS SALICYLIC ACID PRESCRIBED?

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX AND FILLERS

Botox and fillers are all together different things serving a different purpose.

WHAT  ARE BOTOX AND FILLERS MADE OF:

BOTOX: Botox is a protein available in powdered form in a bottle.

FILLER: Filler is transparent gel made of hyaluronic acid. It’s available in pre filled syringes.

Filler: Transparent gel containing syringe

Botox: Powdered form in a bottle which after adding  to saline water  is loaded into syringes.

BOTOX AND FILLERS SERVE DIFFERENT PURPOSE

BOTOX: Botox is injected into the muscles to relax them.  When muscles contract the overlying skin is thrown into fold giving rise to wrinkles. When muscles relax post botox, the overlying skin also relaxes giving a smooth wrinkle free appearance.

Botox: Erases lines which come while making facial expression

BOTOX RESULTS

FILLER: It’s a transparent gel available in pre- loaded syringes. When young, face is like a ripe grape, as we age, it loses volume and shrinks to become a raisin. So the wrinkles and volume loss is filled with transparent gel giving an instant filled up affect.

Filler : Used to fill depressions

FILLERS IN UNDER EYE REGION

BOTH HAVE DIFFERENT LONGEVITY

Filler effect lasts for 12 to 16 months.

Botox results last for 4 to 6 months.

BOTH GIVE THE RESULTS AT DIFFERENT TIMINGS

Botox results are visible at 7 day post injection.

Fillers give instant results.

SIDE EFFECTS OF BOTOX AND FILLERS

Both are safe provided done using high quality products and done by an experienced person having complete knowledge.

Botox done properly doesn’t have a side effect. It can create problems only when not injected into the right muscle. The near by muscle which we didn’t intent to get relaxed gets relaxed by botox migration or direct injection into it. For example: while trying to relax forehead muscle, upper lid muscle may get relaxed and may lead problems in eye opening. But the good part is, the effect anyways wanes off in 3 to 6 months.  And injecting into wrong muscle doesn’t happen when done by an expert. So nothing to worry.  Such cases are rarely reported.

Fillers: Mild swelling and bruising might occur post injection. It goes off in few days time. Rarely filler might get into blood vessels and occlude them. It might stop the blood supply to concerned region and lead to ulcer formation in that region. But all this can be prevented by timely intervention. Hyaluronidase can be injected on suspicion of such things. It immediately dissolve the filler and release the blockage.

GLUTATHIONE – SKIN WHITENING TREATMENT

Fair skin is considered a mark of superiority. It’s an obsession among st dark Asian races. No wonder research is at peak to find wonder molecule for fairness. Glutathione is the latest breakthrough in this regard.

Glutathione is a natural anti oxidant which is produced in liver with help of three amino acids- L-cysteine, glycine, and L-glutamate.

Giving glutathione to a patient suffering from cystic fibrosis lead to an accidental discovery of it leading to fairness.

Fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts are natural sources of glutathione. Tomatoes, avocados, oranges, walnuts and asparagus are some of the most common edibles that help to increase levels of glutathione in the body. Whey protein is another rich source of glutathione.

WAYS OF CONSUMING GLUTATHIONE

Glutathione can be consumed in various ways:

Oral tablets: to be taken 1000mg per day for three months, then given a break of two to three months. Restart for another two months.

Efficacy after oral consumption is questionable as various studies shows variable absorption into blood. Glutathione once consumed needs to be absorbed through intestine into blood. Its absorption through intestines is questionable, thus inject able forms is preferred.

Sublingual sprays: better than oral and cream form since there is direct penetration into blood, bypassing the intestines.

Injections: To be given intravenously, once a week a minimum dose of 1200 mg, for at least ten weeks.

Glutathione Injection

Creams: Doesn’t seem to be promising as penetration into skin is questionable.

Soaps: Doesn’t seem to be promising as penetration into skin is questionable.

Glutathione Soap

HOW DOES GLUTATHIONE WORK AND WHAT RESULT CAN ONE EXPECT?

Various internal and external factors lead to formation of oxidants in body. Oxidants are the main culprit leading to diseases, ageing and wear and tear in body. Glutathione is the main scavenger of these oxidants. Thus it’s called master antioxidant. By depleting the oxidant load in body, its makes one feels more energetic. Also one can appreciate the skin glow and brightness.

As far as its results in skin whitening are concerned, results are variable.

WHAT IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY OF CONSUMING GLUTATHIONE

Injections are the most effective way, since 100 percent of the drug is available

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS

Oral glutathione capsules are considered generally safe by US FDA.

Inject able glutathione is not given approval by US FDA for its safety. That means enough scientific data is yet not available to consider it safe. Though, considering the demand for these injections, they are given rampantly all across the globe. In my personal experience and the experience gathered from my colleagues, we dint come across any major side effects. All we came across were temporary urticarial red rashes, and breathlessness. Breathlessness may have been caused due to slight vasodilatation which glutathione causes. However, here is the list of side- effects which might occur due to glutathione injections.

Thyroid imbalance, kidney failure, Steven Johnson syndrome : it’s an allergic skin reaction where the entire skin slowly peels off almost like that of a burn injury patient.

WHAT IS THE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

There is no fixed protocol for same. After 10 to 20 i.v. injections, one can consume oral glutathione to maintain the results or get few injects every 3 to 4 months interval.
